Rare Permineralized fossil wood with sparkling smoky quartz crystals from Northern Arizona.

This extraordinary fossil wood formed 225 Million years ago, when an ancient forest experienced a fire and flood. The trees were carbonized by the forest fire and later swept away in a flood. Eventually they came to rest, buried in silica rich sediment. This series of events created the perfect environment for minerals to crystalize and replace organic material. Quartz and calcite crystals grew and filled in spaces within the organic matter, creating druzy encrusted petrified wood that sparkles like diamonds. This type of fossilization is called permineralization and environmental conditions must be just right. Only a handful of localities around the world have been found to produce this type of permineralized fossil wood and each locality exhibits a very unique appearance. 

This fossil wood was discovered on a private ranch in Northern Arizona. Our friends dig and collect the wood, we help clean the pieces. Limited supply.
